The elephant in the room is the gun was not made until 1864.

Jim Supica wrote a wonderful article giving advice on how he judges the strength of claims an item was owned by a particular person or was involved in some particular battle or event. He might categorize this a "time traveling gun" which was used before it was made. One example is a well used Colt Single Action revolver on display in a small town western museum that was labelled as a revolver dropped by one of Pancho Villa's men during the 1916 attack on Columbus, New Mexico - the serial number on the gun was some years later.

I would like to sell it. I've had it in a box for the last ten years. I'd rather have someone add it to their collection than it go back into the same box for another 10-20 yrs.
