Navy Cutlass

My newly acquired Navy cutlass has a lot of character (pretty beat up) but I like it's looks. Cord wrapped handle.
Serial number M 299. The stampings on the blade are worn or cleaned off but date may be 1861 but really hard to tell.
There is a dot marked 29 on the basket guard. 32" overall with 26" blade.

The serial number "M/299" (1229) indicates this is an early sword made in1861. I think that is what the partial date shows as well. The cord wrap is not original
