I don't know who recommended this book in the last Ft. Pillow thread, but I want to thank them. It was a special free book when I downloaded the Kindle Edition, though now it is regular price but I started reading it last night and am about a quarter through and it is a fabulous book, interspersing scripture with biography on the path that Bedford was led in his journey to accepting Christ as his personal Savior and how that changed his life.

I can recommend this book wholeheartedly.

I too have that book and totally agree ! Written I believe, by a Baptist Pastor, who's also a long-time Civil War enthusiast.

I recall from reading a bio book on Forrest by Jack Hurst on before the war. He wanted to marry Mary Ann who's father was a minister. The minister came to Forrest and told him that he was a cusser and a gambler and why should he allow him to marry his daughter who is a christian? Forrest's reply was, That's why I want to marry her.

It was her uncle, her father was deceased, but the story is recounted in the book.

You have to wonder if his fighting style would have been less "fierce" if he had converted prior to the war. But then, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was a devout Christian (Presbyterian?), and it didn't seem to be a problem for him.

You are welcome Sir. The ground is all level at the foot of the cross.

That's an interesting thought. I think Forrest would have cussed less but been even MORE fierce! Forrest had always been respectful of religion but had always left that matter to the women of his family. Through the war and after it, like many survivors, he wondered why wasn't he dead. He finally decided it had to have been due to the prayers of his wife and mother. There was no other explanation. It was some long time coming, but he finally did convert and was baptized.
