Before He was elected Governor He served in the Quartermaster's Department in Texas. I'm guessing this was with the Texas State Troops as I can find it no where that He ever joined the Confederate Army.

When Murrah fled to Mexico He was succeeed by his Lt.Gov. Fletcher Stockdale. Stockdale acted as interim head of state until A.J.Hamilton, appointed provisional governor by Andrew Johnson in July 1865, took over the govenor's office under the wing of the occupation army by General Gordon Granger. Murrah has been called the "Last Confederate Govenor of Texas" but there should be an asterisk by this name. He was the last elected Confederate Govenor but Stockdale technically was Govenor for a short time.
