1864 – 1865: Unofficial Brigadier General of Confederate Cavalry

It was quite bizarre that Munford would serve as a distinguish regiment and brigade commander and yet was not promoted to Brigadier. In the final campaign he was in command of Fitzhugh Lee's entire Cavalry Division while still ranked a Colonel (I believe this is the only time a Confederate division in the war was led by someone lower in rank than a brigadier)

One biography of Him states that he continued a wartime feud with General Thomas L. Rosser.I know it had something to do with Rosser being a Jr.. officer to Munford at the beginning of the war and yet by the end of the war Munford served under "General Rosser".
