For what it is worth, I looked at Springfield Research data on the Spencer rifle. SN 2503 is not listed. All of the SNs documented around this number were issued to the 636th and 637th Independent Companies of Ohio Volunteer Sharpshooters.

What year was it made?

Did the OVS fight at Gettysburg?

Here is some information from Marcott's book on Spencer rifle (not carbine) orders and deliveries. The SNs are approximate in that it assumes the rifles were shipped in SN order, which at this point cannot be determined.

Don't ya hate it when they have that crack that runs up the buttstock along where the magazine is. Sadly common in the Carbines and Rifles. I had a Spencer Rifle about 30 years ago. Got it for $1000 and a few years later sold it for $2000. I would of kept it but it too had a long crack running up one side of the buttstock. Google Spencer Rifle for sale and see what they sell for, some sites will also show ones that sold and what they sold for. Other than those cracks it looks nice with clear markings.
