On July 3rd, He commanded this Minnesota regiment for less than 24 hours as all other field and staff officers had fallen. Plus he recieved 2 slight wounds the day before. The mortal wound he recieved on the 3rd was a shell fragment which struck him just above the outside corner of his right eye and exiting behind the right ear
