Virginia. A Union expedition set out from Yorktown for Matthews County, escorted by the gunboats USS Commodore Jones, USS Putnam, and USS Stepping Stones, plus the Army gunboats Flora Temple, C P Smith, Smith Briggs, General Jessup, West End, Samuel Ruatan, and Young Rover, and the transport Maple Leaf. The raiders destroyed over 150 small boats and sloops, and captured cattle herds being moved to Richmond.
