Commodore Andrew Allen Harwood reported the capture of the sloop Thomas Reilly by USS Thomas Freeborn, Lieutenant Commander Samuel Magaw.

USS Bermuda, Acting Master J W Smith, seized the blockade running British schooner Florrie near Matagorda with its cargo including medicine, wine, and saddles.

Is there a time line for captures starting in September 1864 when the blockade could re-align on the Atlantic coast? But the captures might have gone down as many of the blockade runners (smugglers) might have quit the game.

Texas. USS Santee reported the return of USS Sam Houston to Galveston with the schooner Reindeer, which had been captured off San Luis Pass. The schooner was assessed as worthless and sunk.


Sam Houston was a former blockade runner captured on 07 July 1861 after which she was taken into USN service.

Louisiana. USS South Carolina, Commander James Alden, captured the Confederate schooners Ezilda and Joseph H Toone off the South West Pass of the Mississippi River, carrying four to five thousand stand of arms.

Virginia. Two boats from USS Louisiana, Lieutenant A Murray, destroyed a Confederate schooner being fitted out as a privateer at Chincoteague Inlet.

Renamed USS Mobile in September 1864, she remained in Navy service until sold in March 1865. USS Flag, Commander Louis C. Sartori, captured Confederate blockade running schooner Alert near Charleston.

Florida. USS Beauregard, Acting Master Burgess, captured the sloop Last Trial at Key West with a cargo of salt.


USS Beauregard was the former Confederate privateer Beauregard. She was captured on November 12, 1861 by USS William G. Anderson and taken to Key West for adjudication. After being condemned, the schooner was purchased by the U.S. Navy.

Texas. USS Virginia, Lieutenant C H Brown, seized the British blockade runner Jenny off the coast of Texas with a cargo of cotton.


USS Virginia was the former blockade runner Virginia that was captured off Mugeres Island, Mexico, by USS Wachusett and USS Sonoma on 18 January 1863 and was commissioned at the NYNY on 12 June. The U.S. Navy purchased her from the New York City prize court on 1 September 1863.

South Carolina. USS Wamsutta, Acting Master Charles W Lee, reported that the blockade-running steamer Constance had run aground and sunk near Long lsland while trying to enter Charleston harbour.

An Army capture...

Florida. Lieutenant-Commander Edward P Williams in the Army transport Darlington, with sailors and troops embarked, captured the steamer Governor Milton in St John's River.

Darlington, a Confederate steamer, was captured by boats from Pawnee in Cumberland Sound, Fla., 3 March 1862, with a cargo of army wagons, ammunition, and camp equipment on board. She was taken over by the Navy for use in the waters off Fernandina, Fla., and Port Royal, S.C., with Acting Master J. W. Godfrey in command. Darlington assisted the boats of Ellen and Wabash in raising the yacht America in St. John's River, Fla., from 18 to 25 March 1862. She was transferred to the Army for use as a transport in September 1862.

Louisiana. A Union boat crew from USS Cayuga, Lieutenant-Commander William H Dana, boarded and destroyed the blockade runner Pushmataha which had been chased ashore and abandoned off the Calcasieu River. Pushmataha had been set on fire by the crew but the boarding party extinguished the fire before it blew up the ships with the explosives aboard. Another schooner carrying gunpowder was blown up nearby before it could be boarded.
