April 1, 1840 - Meeting in Albany the Liberty Party affirms the previous nomination of abolitionist James Birney for President.

April 1, 1861 - President Abraham Lincoln secretly orders the USS Powhatan to the aid of Fort Pickens, Pensacola, FL, from Fort Sumter, SC.

April 1, 1862 - Lewis Addison Armistead, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

April 1, 1862 - Andrew Atkinson Humphreys, USA, and Adolph Wilhelm August Friedrich von Seinwehr, USA, are appointed Brig. Gen.

April 1, 1862 - Skirmish at Doniphan, MO, with Brig. Gen. Frederick Steele, USA.

April 1, 1862 - Skirmish on the Little Sni, MO, with Brig. Gen. James Totten, USA.

April 1, 1862 - Federal gunboat expedition on the Tennessee River, from Pittsburg Landing, TN, to Eastport, MS, and Chickasaw, AL.

April 1, 1862 - The Headquarters, Army of the Potomac, is transferred to the vicinity of Fortress Monroe, near Hampton, VA, consisting of 12 Federal Divisions, under Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, USA.

April 1, 1862 - Skirmish at Salem, VA, as Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, CSA, retreats up the Shenandoah Valley, protected by his cavalry, under Col. Turner Ashby, CSA.

April 1, 1862 - Advance of the Union forces from Strasburg to Woodstock and Edenburg, VA, under Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Banks, USA. (Apr 1-2)

April 1, 1862 - The siege of Island No. 10 is ongoing.

April 1, 1863- Firstt wartime conscription law in US goes into effect.

April 1, 1863 - William Babcock Hazen, USA, and John Baillie Mclntosh, USA, are appointed Brig. Gen.

April 1, 1863 - Skirmish at Chalk Bluff and Clarendon, AR.

April 1, 1863 - Maj. Gen. Francis J. Henron, USA, supersedes Brig. Gen. John Schofield, USA, in the command of the Federal Army of the Frontier.

April 1, 1863 - Federal scout from Linden to White River, MO. (Apr 1-5)

April 1, 1863 - Skirmish on the White River and at Carroll County, MO.

April 1, 1863 - Engagement at Rodman's Point, NC between Union gunboats and Confederate batteries, during Maj. Gen. D. H. Hill's, CSA, siege of Washington, NC.

April 1, 1863 - Skirmish on the Columbia Pike, TN.

April 1, 1863 - Federal expedition from Jackson, TN, to the Hatchie River, and skirmishes. (Apr 1-16)

April 1, 1863 - Federal expedition from Murfreesborough to Lebanon, Carthage, and Liberty, TN, with the destruction of large quantities of Confederate wheat and bacon, etc. (Apr 1-8)

April 1, 1863 - Lieut. Gen. James Longstreet's Confederate command is reorganized to consist of the following departments:
North Carolina - Maj. Gen. Daniel H. Hill, CSA
Richmond, VA - Maj. Gen. Arnold Elzey, CSA
Southern Virginia - Maj. Gen. Samuel G. French, CSA

April 1, 1863 - Skirmish near the mouth of Broad Run, Londoun County, VA, as Capt. John Mosby's 65 men are surprised by 200 Union cavalry; Mosby counterattacks, inflicting 107 Federal casualties.

April 1, 1863 - Federal expedition from Yorktown to Smith's and Byrd's Plantation, Ware River, VA, by the USS Commodore Morris, which proceeded to gather grain for the ship.

April 1, 1864 - Skirmish at Arkadelphia, AR, as Maj. Gen. Frederick Steele, USA, heads south to assist Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, USA, in the Red River Campaign, LA.

April 1, 1864 - Action at Fitzhugh's Woods, 6 miles above Augusta, AR, on the White River, assisted by the US gunboat, Covington.

April 1, 1864 - Federal expedition aboard the Harriet A. Weed, from Palatka to Fort Gates, FL.

April 1, 1864 - The US transport, Maple Leaf, is destroyed in the Saint John's River, FL, after striking a Confederate mine.

April 1, 1864 - The Pearl River (Louisiana), Expedition, aboard the Federal steamer, Lizzie Davis. (Apr 1-10)

April 1, 1864 - Affair near Bloomfield, MO, where 3 guerrillas are caught in the act of robbing a Union man's house.

April 1, 1864 - Skirmish near Plymouth, NC.

April 1, 1865 - William Babcock Hazen, U.S.A., and Wesley Merritt, U.S.A., are appointed Maj. Gen.

April 1, 1865 - Skirmish near Blakely, AL, as Maj. Gen. Edward R. S. Canby, USA, moves on Mobile AL, and where the Union ironclad, USS Rudolph, is sunk by a Confederate torpedo.

April 1, 1865 - Skirmish at Centerville, AL, with Brig. Gen. James H. Wilson, USA.

April 1, 1865 - Action at Ebenezer Church, near Maplesville, AL.

April 1, 1865 - Skirmish at Maplesville, AL.

April 1, 1865 - Skirmish at Plantersville, AL.

April 1, 1865 - Skirmish near Randolph, AL

April 1, 1865 - Skirmish at Trion, AL.

April 1, 1865 - Federal scout from Pine Bluff to Bayou Bartholomew, AR. (Apr 1-4)

April 1, 1865 - The affair 15 miles northwest of Fort Garland, the Colorado Territory, as 5 hostile Ute Indians attack a Mexican ranch and kill 1 Mexican and some beeves. As most Utes are friendly, the local Federal officer will await further instructions before declaring a regular war against the entire Ute Indian Nation tribe.

April 1, 1865 - Federal operations against Indians west of Fort Laramie, the Dakota Territory, with skirmish (May 20) at Deer Creek Station, as a white man, supposed to be Bill Comstock, formerly of Fort Laramie, seems to have command of the Indians, who have attacked the station. (Apr 1-May 27)

April 1, 1865 - Federal expedition from Dalton to Spring Place and the Coosawattee River, GA, with skirmishes. (Apr 1-4)

April 1, 1865 - Federal scouts against guerrillas from Licking, MO, to places such as Piney Fork of the Gasconade River, Hog Creek, etc, where the Yankees are successful in killing more guerrillas, seizing provisions, and destroying anything of value. (Apr 1-30)

April 1, 1865 - Gen. William T. Sherman's US army is reorganized, NC.

April 1, 1865 - Skirmish near Snow Hill, NC, with Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA.

April 1, 1865 - Skirmish at White Oak Creek, TN.

April 1, 1865 - The Battle of Five Forks, VA, as Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan's Cavalry and Maj. Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren's, 5th US Army Corps attack and overwhelm and separate Maj. Gen. George E. Pickett, CSA from the rest of the Army of Northern Virginia, almost completely surrounding Petersburg, VA, in the process.

April 1, 1865 - Bvt. Maj. Gen. Charles Griffin, USA, relieves Maj. Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren, USA, of the command of the 5th US Army Corps, VA, as Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, USA, removes Warren from command during the height of the Battle of Five Forks for being slow is reacting to Sheridan's orders.

April 1, 1863 - Skirmish at the White Oak Road, near Petersburg, VA, with Maj. Gen. Andrew A. Humphreys, USA, and his 2nd US Army Corps under Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.

April 1, 1866 - US Congress overrides the presidential veto of the Civil Rights Bill.

April 1, 1867 - Blacks vote in municipal elections in Tuscumbia, Alabama

Today marks the 157th​ anniversary of the Battle of Five Forks. This battle took place on April 1st​, 1865, at Five Forks in Dinwiddie County, Virginia.
