Before becoming a major in the Jeff Davis Legion he was Captain of the Adams County Cavalry Co.The Jeff Davis Legion that He was a field officer in was composed of companies from Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi.

He served in the Eastern theater at the beginning of the war. He even participated in JEB Stuart's ride around McClellan. On Dec. 2, 1862 He was promoted to brigadier and transferred to the western theater, where he led a mounted division in Wheeler's Cavalry Corps.
