1861: United States Vice Consul of Norway and Sweden​
1861 – 1864: Lt. Colonel of 55th​ Illinois Volunteers Infantry Regiment​
1862: Temporary Brigade Commander at Battle of Shiloh.​
Suffering from the effects of going nearly blind and in bad shape.​
1864: He Stormed Atlanta during the Battle of Atlanta.​
1864: Resigned from the Union Army on September 20th​ due to health​
1865: Colonel of United States Army, First Veteran Army Corps​
1865: Union Army Recruiter in Chicago, Illinois.​
1865: Resigned from United States Army on May 31st​
