Thank you, thank you. For now I'm guessing he surrendered with what was left of his outfit in Greensboro, NC. Don't know why he'd otherwise have got out of the army unless he was seriously wounded which doesn't seem to have been the case.

So now that we're on the discovery trail I'll toss a monkey wrench into the machinery and give you all an opportunity to excel. Confederate POW record from Ancestry showing Illtid Thomas on the first line follows. It indicates he was a Sergeant in Company D, 1st Georgia Infantry who was captured in Franklin TN following the Battle of Nashville. The Tennessee & the Civil War web page for the 26th Tennessee Infantry (http://tngenweb.org/civilwar/26th-tennessee-infantry-regiment/) shows that a number of companies in the 26th were assigned to the 1st Confederate Infantry which is also denoted as the 1st Georgia (Confederate). Company G, 26th Tennessee became Company K, 1st Confederate. Unfortunately I have not yet been able to find record of Illtid Thomas in the 1st Confederate.

Wow - this is getting deep. Excellent find. Looks like my guy was captured three times and returned to service. That seems unusual (and unlucky).

Captured at Franklin Dec 18, 1864; admitted to USA General Hospital Nashville with "gunshot fracture of left forearm." Missile noted as "con ball" (conoidal ball?) Note on card from hospital says "wounded at Franklin, Nov 30 1864" Treatment (Blank) Transferred to Provost Marshal March 9, 1865.

Forwarded to Louisville March 7, 1865; arrived at Louisville during 5 days ending March 10, 1865; transferred to Camp Chase March 10, 1865; received at Camp Chase March 12, 1865; transferred to Point Lookout March 26, 1865; imprisoned at Point Lookout until released in a group of Sick Prisoners taking the Oath of Allegiance June 5, 1865.

Three more POW records. With transfer dates in February and March, 1865, it seems unlikely Illted Thomas served again after his capture at Franklin. All three records show Company K, 1st Confederate.
