I don't know. These conversations are always like watching a dog show, when Best In Show is named. A gazillion dogs out there in the world, all pretty darn good, that's the one measuring up while everyone's watching. It's a little tough getting Lincoln his due anyway, impeded where myth meets legend meets history. He did what he did, dead in office had not, one thing to do with it. Unsure if we've minted pennies bearing the likeness of Garfield or Taylor?

I would still love to see how Reconstruction would have gone had Lincoln lived. "With malice toward none, with charity for all" being the resounding anthem during that time. As it has been said before, he was truly the best friend the South could have had for after the war, to begin the healing process. Interesting indeed to think on what could have been.

you'll get nothing but agreement from me. Now here's the rub if lincoln would have lived what would reconstruction have look like and would we still be singing his praise. I believe reconstruction was one of the toughest problems of his presidency which he never was able to finish.

Grant didn't do any better. The North was done with it by the end of Grants 1st term. Grant wanted to send troops to MS and said if he did he would save MS but lose OH. Sherman said well the Rebels have learned their lesson, they won't leave the Union again. The Federal Government put their efforts in the West. It was time to move on.

on that point old I couldn't agree more. The man was a total failure as a president and probably as a person.
