Lincoln Was Lincoln Illegitimate?

I feel bad bumping this, but...

I was going through Brooks Simpson's blog and found some crazy email he got. Here's the gist:

Thanks for bumping up this important thread. If a modern Presidential Candidate got less than 40% of the popular vote. No votes in 10 States. Most assuredly he would be considered Illegitimate. Something TJ warned us about.

Apparently that person didn't read the Chicago Tribune. Dewey defeated Truman, not Eisenhower. You all know that famous photo (that's still under copyright). :D

But back then, @uaskme , the states apparently didn't have to ask the Supreme Court if they could keep someone from a major party off the ballot. Today they do, and the last time it was asked the Supreme Court said, "No." That's always subject to change in the future, though, I suppose.

Here is a good explanation why Lincoln wasn't on the ballot of Southern States. Doesn't seem he was left off or excluded. It was left up to the Party.

These threads have set me to wondering: How far would you go to try to "prove" that you were related to someone famous even if you suspected (or downright knew) that you weren't?
Most people wouldn't. Although, I've seen it multiple times. Usually with no negative consequences other than them boasting about the connection.

I do know of a couple people who joined a lineage based organization fraudulently. They usually get exposed and eventually expelled.

Then there's the case of the man who fraudulently claimed to be a descendant of Robert E Lee for political reasons (Rev Robert Lee IV).
