Originally enlistment was in the Rockbridge Rifles in Lexington April 18, 1861 and was elected it's Captain. This unit became part of the 5th Virginia then was transferred to the 4th Virginia. It was then assigned to the 27th Virginia. Letcher continued on with the 27th u til promoted Lt. Col. Of the 58th Virginia and eventually it's Colonel on May 1, 1862.
 
I looked it up and according to one source he did have a brother John and they were grandsons of Sam Houston.. He was relieved of command by a Major Kasey before his unit crossed over into Maryland. He later resigned and returned to his newspaper.
