Leroy Walker was the best secretary of war Davis had. Yes or no and why.
Not really seeing the pro side. Walker was only the,Secretary of war from Febuary 1861 to September 1861. Only seven months. Walker predicted that by May 1861 Confederate troops would occupy Boston.
So what was Walkers contribution to the cause of the Confederacy?

Sorry for the delayed response. I would say the pro side is he understood his role in relation to Davis.

Being Walker was only a Secretary of War for seven months what were his achievements? Understanding one's job is all well and good but it's not all that significant without some achievements.

He helped to create a war department and army from scratch. He was no light weight he was a former gov. of Alabama I think he should have remained in his post.

Could be. It might help myself and others with more details or at least a link to more details about Walker. Why was Walker the Secretary of War for only seven months?

My understanding is he became ill, resigned to recover and once recovered took a commission in the army. Every sec of war was denounced to one extent or the other, so I am looking at what kind of working relationship with the president and I haven't found anything that points to a bad relationship.

Thats something . On the other hand seven months is not much time to accomplish a whole lot.

Can any of the CS sec of wars be said to have accomplished much, given the view of Davis regarding his role in military affairs. Guys like Walker, Samuel Cooper in my opinion caught a lot of gruff when they were in an almost impossible position stuck between Davis, congress and a unreasonable press.

That is why it is difficult to evaluatewhich Confederate Secretary of War was the best one. One would have to list their success' s and failures.
