Uniforms Leopard skin ammo pouch?

Both before and after the Civil War the Washington Light Artillery (South Carolina) was know to use leopard skin pouch with a green cord strap. Are there any known examples of South Carolina leopard skin ammo pouches used during the Civil War?

All I can say is that the South Carolinians showed unaccustomed restraint if all they had were leopard skin ammo pouches.​

I think the man pictured above was a member of a Texas regiment of Cavalry. I have seen other images and most depict Texans or other Hispanic soldiers in that theater. it makes sense as Jaguars were native in Mexico and could have been in the southern Texas area. As far a South Carolina, the skins could have been obtained in other ways besides hunting in Central America. A pretty dangerous animal to hunt.

The man pictured above is Captain Samuel J. Richardson of the 1st Texas Partisan Rangers. The holsters and trousers are jaguar skin, not leopard as mis-reported over and over. The range of jaguars and other New World cats--cougars/pumas excepted--has diminished a great deal. There used to be many bears in Texas, believe it or not. At Texas Southmost--the most southerly portion of Texas near Brownsville, it is thought that the ocelot may still roam. In deep South Texas people report dead bobcats--which get very spotted in Texas--as ocelots. Some state parks and wildlife personnel will often refer to such mis-reported ocelots as "bobelots."

Leopard skins were a hot item for cavalry in the Napoleonic Wars. The French Republic during the Valmy era adopted leather helmets for light infantry that were to be ringed with leopard skin, but in truth it was usually a paper band with a printed "leopard spot" pattern.

No need. My g-grandaughter's school report informs me that jaguars have returned to the Big Bend in Texas & New Mexico. They are very illusive, so hard to know exactly what the extent is. There are mountain lions in Tennessee, now. The hair trap DNA identifies them as coming from the Black Hills of South Dakota! I am now reasonably conversant with middle school level science.

The cougars in Michigan are from South Dakota too. There must be a huge population there. In Michigan they are all males looking for new territory.

It is remarkable. The elk herds in North Carolina & Tennessee have connected via pathways over the Smokies. Given a chance nature will reconstruct itself… if we get out of the way.

Indeed. Rocky Mountain elk were introduced in Michigan many decades ago and are thriving in the northern lower peninsula. Wolves worked their way east from Minnesota and there are over a thousand of them in the upper peninsula. Somehow one made it south to near the Indiana border.
