He was right there at the beginning when Harper's Ferry was taken, I think, being from that general neighborhood. And he must also have lived close to Henry Kidd Douglass who worked with Jackson too. Those first few weeks of the war in that area leading up to First Manassas are interesting; so much of their success hinged on those efforts.

Apparently it wasn't just General William Pendleton's skill in artillery that attracted Robert E. Lee's attention. Pendleton was the father-in-law to his cousin Edwin.
