Nominated for the office of Lt. Governor of Indiana in early 1863 but he declined to remain in the Army. This was while he was recovering from his thigh wound he received at Fredricksburg and the Gibraltar Brigade was turned over to Col. Samuel Carroll. And just before his transfer to the Western theater.
