Kearney and Hooker

Both Phil Kearney and Joe Hooker were division commanders in the III Corps. They developed reputations as fighting generals and also voiced their opinions quite freely. After Kearney's death at Chantilly, Hooker was promoted to I Corps commander and on to AoP command.
If Kearney was not killed would he have blocked Hooker's rise? There were rumors Lincoln considered Kearney to replace McClellan. I don't think he was serious but still interesting. Kearney most likely would have been given Corps command, possibly the III Corps. Whatever Kearney's presents would have created an interesting scenario.
