Jones served as a Staff officer in 2nd Corps until after Chancellorsville, when the brigade of J. R. Jones (no relation) needed a new commander, and he was promoted.
He was killed in action on the first day of the Wilderness.

That must have been somewhat confusing. On May 21, 1863 He took over brigade command from General John Robert Jones. John R. Jones' courage was being questioned and was he charged with cowardice for apparently hiding behind a tree during the Battle of Chancellorsville and was relieved of command.He not only lost his brigade but his commission as brigadier was not confirmed.

J. R. was probably one of the most incompetent men to have served under Jackson. I believe John Campbell, the dejure brigade commander who led the command thru the Valley Campaign and deserved the promotion, resigned in disgust when J. R. was promoted. Probably would have made a good brigadier, who knows.

That wound he received at Mine Run was a head wound but must not have been a serious one as he returned to duty within a few days.

At West Point Jones acquired the nickname "Rum" Jones based on his favored choice of beverage. The nickname stuck with him and delayed his deserved promotion. Robert E. Lee interviewed him prior to recommending him to be advanced to Brigadier General and received Jones' word that Jones would resign if he relapsed. A tidbit that I did not know about Jones, his sister was married to A.P. Hill's older brother Thomas. I wasn't aware Hill had an older brother.
