It was his division that anchored the right flank of the Army of Northern Virginia at Antietam.When the Union lX Corps attacked across the Burnside Bridge it resulted in the death of Jones' brother-in-law, Union Colonel H.W.Kingsbury.This has been speculated as a possible factor plus the strain of battle that aggravated a longstanding heart condition. Jones died the following January in Richmond due to this heart condition.

The division he led at the time of Antietam had been the same division that used to belong to John B. Magruder. When Magruder left for the Western Theater, Jones got temporary command then assumed permanent command in time for 2nd Bull Run.

His marriage to Sarah Taylor, the daughter of Gen. Joseph P. Taylor, also made him an in-law to Zachary Taylor, Jefferson Davis, and Richard Taylor to name a few.

That West Point Class of 1846 that he graduated from also had George McClellan as #2. Amongst the other notables Thomas Jackson was #17.

I believe this is the Jones known as "Neighbor" Jones due to his out going personality.

In one biography he's described as a capable but not brilliant division leader.

Jones was a division commander but his promotion to major general wasn't confirmed until October 11, 1862.

I'd have to look at the back date of the commission. I know it was put forward to be confirmed shortly after Antietam but I don't recall when it was dated for.

Looking into congressional records right now. His promotion to Major General was not confirmed by congress (13 to 10) after 6 months, which essentially reverted him back to Brigadier. However a day later Senator Edward Sparrow from the Committee on Military Affairs brought the matter up again and two weeks later after another 3 votes he was confirmed (11 to 6). New date of rank was the same day, being October 11, 1862.
