Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General.​

In the Civil War, he served as a Colonel in the 1st Tennessee Cavalry and for service to the Union was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March, 1865.​

​

After the war, he served as private secretary to his father President Andrew Johnson until he retired in 1869.​

Died: April 22, 1869

Place of Death: Greeneville, Tennessee

Cause of Death: Suicide

Age at time of Death: 35 years old

Burial Place: Andrew Johnson National Cemetery, Greeneville, Tennessee

I totaly agree. Also known asthe 1st East Tn Cavalry. Though I hive a big part of that credit to James P Brownlow. A superb fighter.

Miss Bartlet was the G grand daughter of Andrew Johnson. She gave the tour of the homestead until she passed away back in the 1980's. She was a walking encyclopedia of her family's history; much more knowledgeable than the 'canned' version you get from the park service now. If you caught her on a slow day, she'd set on the back porch and talk to you for hours.

Alcoholism. He was forced to resign from the Army because of it. Another brother died during the war as a result from a fall from his horse. Don't know if it was the same reason, but one can surmise I suppose. As a son of an alcoholic, I can certainly sympathize.
