I wanted to share my excitement. I joined a reenactor's unit today! The 6th US Infantry Regiment, Company C. I'm being assigned to a squad as we speak. It's not a large unit, about 50 people total and only 35-40 of them soldiers, but considering this is northern CO, I'm happy nonetheless.

I did some reading up on the unit, and was surprised to learn that not only did Zachary Taylor command it personally during the War of 1812, but then Lt. Armistead was part of the unit before tendering his resignation and going to the Confederacy. The 6th fought at the Siege of Yorktown, the Battle of Mechanicsburg, Gaines' Mill, Malvern Hill, the Battle of Groveton, the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and finally Gettysburg. After that, it spent the remainder of the ACW being garrisoned around the east coast, ending the war in Savannah, GA.

Congrats. In our area we fall in with or they fall in with us, the 12th US infantry. They use to be a rather large group like us and now they are a skeleton crew like us, the 28th NY infantry. The regulars always refer to us at reenactments as "Old New York." Be prepared to polish your brass!

My 3rd great uncle John P Gaines is friends with Zachary Taylor fought with him in the Mexican war. He was also the Governor of Oregon. His brother HK Gaines is related to ZT. They all had a lot in common with being friends and their work. Gaines Mill was named after some of my distant family members. But my relatives owned the property of Gaines Landing in Arkansas. There was a skirmish there.

Well done, your excitement shines through. It's so very nice to read something that is full of positive energy. I hope you really have a great time. Like the others have said, post some photos...
