Garnett was the senior Colonel in the Gamecock Brigade, and served in the brigade under Pickett and Garnett. He actually led the brigade many times, particularly after Pickett was wounded in the Seven Days, he led the brigade for the remainder of that campaign and on to Second Manassas, before Garnett was assigned to command.
At Gettysburg, he was wounded, and with the death of Garnett, he was promoted to Brigadier, though it took him I believe until November before he recovered enough to lead the brigade. He did so until Sayler's Creek, where he and most of Pickett's Division were captured.

After Col. Huntons promotion to brigadier the 8th Virginia was taken over by it's Lt.Col. Norborne Berkeley and his brother,Edmund, became the Lt. Colonel. And brothers, William and Charles, became major and senior captain. The 8th became known as the "Berkeley Regiment."
