How would you serve?

"How would I have served ? "

Interesting question @bamaman.
There's a 99.9 % chance I would have served as a basic Infantry soldier.

My fantasy would be a Captain in the CS Navy ...
sailing the CSS Shenandoah into Melbourne, Australia. :smile coffee:

Actually I have Civil War relatives in all three branches.
However reality is fact.

I'm not wealthy enough for a Cav. Unit.
I hated math and trigonometry, so artillery is not an option.
But I'm pretty good with a rifle.

So yeah, I would have been in an Infantry Company ... by default.

If you fought in the war would you be in the infantry, artillery or cavalry?
I want to say artillery but they got a lot of counter-fire from opposing artillery. I'm too squeamish for medical crew. Knowing my luck, I'll be joining just in time for the infamous "mud march"

@7thWisconsin We're on the same page regarding Custer's abilities as a cavalry commander.

He was a lot more courageous then I would have been, but then I think all those guys were.

His brother Tom wasn't any slouch either.

As my icon suggests, I would be infantry - probably some sergeant or other. As to which side I would be fighting on ...

That would be several decades ago. Right now (since I have aged somewhat), I would be a quartermaster or the armorer.

Though my ancestors were infantry, cavalry and Quartermaster; for me it would be artillery (or the Marine Corps).
