Served for Confederacy and Union

This particular pocket watch and fob of mine are relevant to this discussion. Some of the information in these slides will be elementary for the Civil War history buffs here, whereas other aspects of those slides will be elementary to expert pocket watch collectors. These slides were meant to be able to inform the general public, who has neither of these expertises.

Great post! I've lived in Sullivan County, TN, all my 78 years. Sullivan was one of only six counties in Upper East Tennessee that voted in favor of secession. It was known to Unionists as "little Confederacy". I've got East Tennessee and Western North Carolina relatives who fought on both sides and even a few "switch-hitters". I had a 2nd great-granduncle, William A Blakely, and his son, James, in Co. A Union 1st Tennessee Cavalry. My wife had relatives in the 48th Virginia. One who died of wounds at Gettysburg. According to the history of the 1st Tennessee, James Blakely was the last member of the regiment wounded in the war.

An interesting one: Orrin McFadden was a Maine schoolteacher who was teaching in Georgia in 1861. He was conscripted into the 47th Georgia Infantry, but deserted to the Union Navy when the 47th was near Savannah. He ended the war as a USCT lieutenant colonel.
