Well they did use balloons at times so that might have worked. Probably still safer being on the ground crew in such an operation.

If one could obtain a commission fin the Adjutant General's department, that probably would be great. Otherwise, most likely one would end up acting as a clerk somewhere.

I'd say artillery, but would also go for Engineer or Signal Corps. A fourth would be the Ordnance Department.

Signal Corps (Union) for me, or the Military Telegraph Service. Most likely I would be a civilian employee what with being Canadian, a senior citizen and physically disabled. I could help improve their dreadful cryptography.

You might be selling yourself short, @lupaglupa . There's been a spate of books lately about the librarian spies of World War II. Librarians know how to research and how to manage/synthesize information. I don't think you'd have to act like a tramp unless you wanted to (Rose Greenhow, I'm looking at you).

Another type of "woman's work" was making cartridges at the arsenals/laboratories. I can't say I'd recommend it.

I was walking through the Soldiers Cemetery at Gettysburg years ago, and was stopped by a group of men pondering this question and they stopped me to ask.

Their answer was artillery because you were less likely to be fired at, and if so by the opposing army's artillery which isn't always accurate. In their eyes it was the least risky for death.

Probably... If I was forced to choose... Artillery. It has its ups and downs.. But almost feels safer to me.

Yes, and you wouldn't be able to hear it thunder when the war was over. My outfit in Vietnam provided security for a 155mm artillery unit and I now wear hearing aids.
