Hello,
I'm new to the group and I hope I have the right forum.
I'm interested in getting into re-enacting but I don't know where to start. I'm located in northern Pennsylvania. Can anyone direct me where I can get in contact with a group ?
Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum @Whizbang .

What aspect of reenacting interests you? Which branch of service? Mainstream or progressive? Union or Confederate? How far are you willing to travel? Are you interested in competitive shooting, reenacting and or living history?

This information will enable us to better help you. These days many units do both a Union and a Confederate impression. It's important to find a unit where you are a good fit so you can really enjoy the experience.

Two units which I suggest you view their website's and then possibly contact them. Talking only costs you time and these two units have outstanding reputation's.

Hello Whizbang,

All of this advice is great.

Before making the plunge I recommend a good physical even if you do the gym.

And before you join up perhaps seeing a large battle like Cedar Creek could be useful by talking to a lot of folks. It's October just outside Front Royal.

For artillery you should be certified.. I would say must as your life could depend on getting the proper training and having a test and practical. And drill until you can do it in your sleep.

Cavalry is way out of my OAP league. I had a year of Western riding lessons and got up to canter before we quit during the Pandemic. Nice nice nice gig if you can afford it.

That leaves infantry and that's where it looks this old geezer is going maybe if I can get past Cedar Creek this year. If you go this route or actually any route …please please please look after your feet and foot gear … don't skimp … they call what the grunt infantry / artillery wear are shoes! Ha what a joke! Get insoles and slippers when the folks are away.

We did three years and it is s lot of fun and you will meet salt of the earth folks who would give the shirt off their back. Well better not take it as it would be drenched in sweat.

Don't drink on duty as it just dehydrates you quicker and is dangerous around black powder . A toddy or maybe a double as you commiserate a loss or celebration over a win around the campfire.

Don't talk politics and/or religion. We kept our mouths shut no matter what we heard. They have a church service and people should understand if you want to attend or not.

Best to test drive the whole idea before getting into it whole hog . We bought our duds in Gettysburg.

Good luck … it is a worthy interest,

Hello @Whizbang are you interested in Federal or Confederate? Your best bet is to try and find a couple events in your area and talk to the guys and find a group that fits what you're looking for. Some take it more seriously than others, some are family oriented while some are more boy's club. It's just a matter of what's a good fit for you. You say you're in Northern PA, I know a good group of CS guys that are based in the Rochester NY area but they do a lot of stuff in Pa, wouldn't be surprised if they had some members in your area. I saw the Liberty Rifles suggested. A great organization and they put on great events but it's hard core. That would be a good goal but I'd get my feet wet a some small local stuff first if you're just starting out. If you like it learn the drill and put a good kit together then jump into the hard core campaigner stuff if you want to try it. Those events are great but would be tough for just starting out.

Hello @Whizbang, welcome to the Forum! Lots of great folks here.

I am from Lycoming County, PA

I participated in the Cedar Creek event once with the people of Cooper's Battery B; 1st PA Light Artillery unit. That was years ago, however, they are still active as far as I know. Great folks. I believe they are based out of Shamokin, PA, however, they had lots of members from all over when I met them. I have also met with members of the 87th PA, Company C reenactment unit. They are based out of the southern part of the state near York, however, again, they have members from all over.

I do like the idea of you attending the Cedar Creek event. It is a wonderful event that I have been attending as a spectator since the early 1990's. Actually it is a straight shot for you because is is just off of I-81 a little south of Winchester, VA. It takes me about 4 hours to get there from near Williamsport, but I don't pick up I-81 until Harrisburg. You could hop on it near Scranton and not stop till the Middletown, VA exit! I like that idea because I always walk the camps all day talking to people. I have met many good folks and you could ask if there are any Pennsylvania units around and someone would tell you. You would also get to see what kind of gear the units are using. There is also always a suttler village set up where you can buy uniforms and anything you might need. However, I would let some of the actual reenactors talk to you about that. Gear isn't cheap and they could tell you some of the better places to get things.

The 87th PA and Coopers Battery B both have Cedar Creek on their schedules; so they will be there. Or, you can look at their schedules and see where they will be before that if you want. I know the 87th will be doing some living history at Gettysburg and Harpers Ferry in August and September. I think they will be at the Pry House museum near Antietam at Keedysville, MD too. I am interested in the 87th PA because my great grandfather served in the actual unit during the war and was actually at the real battle of Cedar Creek.

I don't know of any units right near you? There used to be a 2nd Virginia Infantry Confederate unit in Wilkes-Barre years ago, but I didn't see them when I was searching the web. There are also units in the Philadelphia area as well. The 71st PA is somewhere in that area. A lot of people are interested in the Philadelphia Brigade units because they were right at the wall during Pickett's Charge.

I am really glad to hear that you are interested in reenacting. I am not a reenactor myself, however, I really appreciate what they are doing. I have studied the war for years yet there is nothing like being in those camps experiencing all the sights, sounds, smells, and yes, tastes that the soldiers experienced that you can't get from a book. And that one time with Coopers Battery B at Cedar Creek totally blew me away. (pardon the pun..lol) I couldn't join at the time but would have if I could. Wow. Pulling the lanyard of a 10lb Parrot cannon up on the hill behind the Heater House with Confederates fighting their way toward us! And I could look to my right, over to Red Hill maybe a half mile away, and see exactly where my great grandfather was fighting. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life.

Enjoy!

Good post LC… we didn't take any suggestions but jumped right in there during our time in.

I think actually seeing a big event - as Cedar Creek is - fills you with shock and awe. Being able to wander the camps on your own and asking questions is vital. Get a Turkey leg vax other goodies and peruse the suttlers. "Do I really want an old line traditional unit that posts sentries and has old school orientation to being completely authentic? " God bless 'em.

My unit sure wasn't and yet we had true experts on tubes and tactics. It would not be good to be "stuck" in a unit that yells and barks out orders in camp. I would rather you being out there drilling with the gun. Once in motor memory - that you trust - then comes the most important feature safety checks. You will watch what everyone else is doing and if you don't like something for God sakes say something. I don't care if it was "General Lee" himself who ordered me to fire a piece when I had major heartburn. Always always always wurm/worm your gun - essentially taking a cork screw on a pole that removes burning embers and material in the piece. Better that than shooting a pop can into a line of Union.

I am writing a series of posts about our experiences and memories. "Confessions of a Powder Monkey" They may contain useful bits of information you can use. The next one is about shoes - but calling them shoes is being generous. Instruments of pain and torture. I hope the units are more enlightened and permit their gunners and cannoneers the option for custom well fitting and comfy boots.

Ask questions. As a newbie some may assume you are totally ignorant Sorry but you do know very little until you graduate from artillery school. I think Longstreet still runs one near Clarksbiurg WVA. Stonewall Jackson's birthplace. Brutal but they have to be. They are not going to pass you just for showing up.

I guess next to this - cavalry would be most risky. You will probably see someone being dumped at Cedar.

That's it for now. Any questions or concerns feel free to contact me direct.

Humbly sent,
OTC

I'm in PA but my group is Confederate. Actually we're doing an event this Saturday in Gap, PA. It's a smaller one day event, but if you have time and can come down, I'm sure you could talk to the Federal group who will be there, I believe the 69th PA.

Alas Sir … I am tied to my home and cannot travel or leave home more than two hours. Our 9 month old GSD baby is truly a real b****
and a daddy's girl. It would break my heart to leave her, my two Goldens and old boy mutt. I do hope to shake free of my ennui and post Covid malaise and get to Cedar Creek as a walk on. I am thinking about re-upping into the infantry for my final hurrah! I know very little about this branch except a lot of marching and obliques. Is there like a sharpshooter unit that could deploy in the shade? Dunno? You infantry guys can let this tenderfoot know. I know .,, I know … Papa's reenacting again!
