1862: Wounded in leg & foot that required Amputation at 2nd Corinth​
1863: Discharged from Union Army due to wounds on February 26th
1863 – 1864: Commissioner of Enrollment, Third District of Iowa​
1864: Colonel of 46th Iowa Volunteers Infantry Regiment​
