I recently purchased a Springfield Model 1863 rifle (pictures posted in the small arms forum). There are very light markings on the left side of the buttstock. I tried to enhance the markings and used a magnifying glass. While some markings are a bit more clear, here is what it says from what I see from top to bottom:

48
K
48
PVV

I did some searching online and found out that PVV stands for Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers. There was a 48th Regiment of Pennsylvania volunteers (infantry) that had companies A through K. From what I read they exchanged their Harpers Ferry muskets for Enfield rifles in 1861 or 1862. They were fitted with Model 1861/63 rifles in April 1864.

From what I can tell, this rifle was part of that unit. But that is just my guess - can someone shed some insight as to whether my semi-educated guess is right or am I way off base? I'd love to know more about this rifle, where it might have been, etc.

Thank you for any help you can provide!
