Handguns Help with 1860 Colt Serial Number

New member here. Just wondering if anyone might know what unit an 1860 Colt serial 7229 might have been issued to. It's all matching numbers and shows wear on barrel muzzle from holster wear. Thanks if you can help

Great Old War Horse. Its not listed in the SRS so the unit of issue is lost in time. Below is the range in the SRS.

Looks like it went to Captain RHK Whiteley, Governor's Island NY in either his order for 50 or 500 pieces. Further research may tell the unit issued.

They were shipped to him.

It appears as if Governor's Island was a Supply Depot, Arsenal as well as a Fort and that many expeditions (Star Of West and Port Royal as examples) emanated from there.

From the National Park Service's National Resource Study p. 91:

"The Ordnance Department on Governors Island, under the able management of Major R.H.K. Whiteley, continues extremely active. There seems to be lack of space for the munitions of war constantly arriving there. Dalghrens [sic], Columbiads, mortars, and guns of nearly all denominations, boxes of shot and shell, gun-carriages, etc. etc, crowd the wharves, and boats of one kind or another are constantly there, either delivering or receiving cargoes of warlike stores."

I would think that the now Major Whiteley would supply troops as required. Troops were recruited and received drill on Governor's Island, in addition to uniforms, weapons and accouterments.

Good chance the weapons were issued to cavalry on their way to Port Royal, a little research might uncover whether this is correct.

Residence was not listed; a 32 year-old US Army Officer. Enlisted on 3/27/1842 as a Captain. On 3/27/1842 he was commissioned into US Army Ordnance Dept (date and method of discharge not given) (Prior service since 07/01/1830; subsequent service until 04/14/1875) Promotions: * Major 8/3/1861 * Lt Colonel 6/1/1863 * Colonel 3/13/1865 by Brevet * Brig-General 3/13/1865 by Brevet Other Information: born 4/15/1809 in Cambridge, MD died 6/9/1896 in Baltimore, MD (Graduate USMA 07/01/1830)​
