Hello everyone! I recently acquired a Spencer Carbine. I believe it is an 1860 but am not certain. Appears to be in pretty good shape for the age it is. The barrel measures 22" but has 3 lands and 3 groves and it has the Stabler cutoff installed. Perhaps it was modified by Springfield after the war and the barrel was lined and the Stabler cutoff added? Ordered up some cerosafe to slug the chamber of it. The stock markings are still there but very faint. SN 17162. Any help would be greatly appreciated

The photos show a carbine, and this serial number shown is far too low to be a Model 1860 carbine. The serial might be partial, or the gun might be a model 1865 Carbine.

Serial #61379 as in the add posted (photo 13) doesn't show up in the SRS listings
I don't know why he posted those are they are from Harry Ridgeway's website.

I know its a carbine as I can see that. I was just making note of the fact of the serial #. BTW they are NOT to low to be an 1860 carbine.

These are too low to be a Model 1860 Spencer Carbine.
Believe it
Accept it
It is absolutely the truth.
The first 9,000 to 10,000 Model 1860 Spencers were all rifles - Spencer did not make ANY CARBINES until after the rifle contract was finished.
It is pretty common for Springfield Research Service to list incorrect numbers, and in this case, there were absolutely no Spencer Model 1860 carbines made until the 9,000 to 10,000 serial range.
