I'm sure we would all agree this is not General Banks. Who is he?

I cropped the photo, flipped it horizontally and lifted the shadows. Some letters are partially visible.

I think it reads 'Gen. Ammen.' I can't locate a good photo of him to compare with this one.

This photo from wikipedia bears a strong resemblance.

I say it is Ammen. If so, this is the best photo of him I know. Anyone have another photo of him? Looking for your opinions.

I don't think its Ammen. He would have been in his mid to late 50s during the war
Hmm... I didn't take his age into account. 56 in '62 when he Brigadier. Maybe somebody will come along with a better identification.

Maybe. But not quite. I went through all of the photos on Wiki for union generals. Only thing I can really think of is that the name could be German, you know, those from the XI Corps?

Could be one of the countless March 1865 promotions. I think if you could breathe, you got a promotion

Horace Porter?

I think, based on the writing, that it may be General Sumners Son, Edwin Jr. He was promoted 1865, then stayed in the army until 1899

It's difficult to read the top half of the letters. Sumner Jr. is a good guess. He was born in '35 and would be 30 at the end of the war. I think the mystery man in the first post looks like he's in his 40s. I can't say for sure.

I didn't see any matches, but this is a good place to start comparing (and maybe bookmark):

I checked the the names mentioned with no luck. One would need the patience of Job to look at every photo!

Yeah, this could have been taken in the 1870's maybe. Problem with those photos is that a lot of them were taken years after the war.
