Was looking through the National Archive's vast collection digitized by Flickr, and have a question. Noticed several notable Union officers wore an arm band on their right arm, which resembled an organza type fabric. I have flipped the photos:

Any thoughts?

Probably a mourning band.
My thought is they were worn after President Lincoln died.
Probably a mourning bands may well be correct. While some, or even all, might be for the death of Lincoln is an open question.
On the other side, here's Jeb Stuart in a mourning band. I think I've seen in a book that this photo was taken after General Jackson's death in 1863.

Thanks, all…the fabrics were varied, and maybe the wives had a hand in adjusting them…

This is neat, does anybody else have photographs of other generals wearing mourning bands? I'd assume some in the south might wear one for the death of John Tyler, Jackson, or Cleburne.
Thanks….these were from the National Archives thru Flickr. There was a wealth of portraits on this site, but, not surprisingly, a dearth of Confederate images.

I have a school class picture of my father in 1949 wearing a mourning band when his father died. I wonder when that custom stopped in the USA.
Today, most military members will wear a memorial bracelet or KIA bracelet on their wrist. For active duty members, at least within the Marine Corps, they are authorized to wear while in uniform.
