According to Louisianians in the Western Confederacy by Stuart Salling, that is a photo of Gibson while Colonel of the 13th Louisiana Infantry, probably taken early in the war. Now I don't think the image in question is Gibson, I just like that photo of him.

As for the image in question, I think Brig. Gen. Meriwether Jeff Thompson also bears a strong resemblance. Look at the nose, eyebrows, ears.... just add a goatee! Although the coat Thompson is wearing in this photo appears to have three stars without a wreath, indicating a colonel. Apparently Thompson was never promoted to Brigadier in Confederate service but only in the Missouri State Guard.

I think @AUG351 has come closet with Henry W. Allen and Meriwether Jeff Thompson.

Allen seems to have more lines at the outside edges of his eyes.

I've been researching that engraving all day and each site I find that engraving on id's that picture as McCulloch. I believe if it is McCulloch, it is a highly stylized rendition of him as a younger man as Ben was 50 years old when killed.

That same image is on Find-a-Grave.

Definitely not Ben McCulloch:

With regard to post number 10 and to Andy's post, yes, it is sometimes attributed to Robert (Black Bob) McCulloch of the 2nd MO Cav. In fact, the image is even used on the wayside marker outside Walnut Grove Cemetery where Robert McCulloch is buried. But it isn't Robert McCulloch. Robert was a Colonel. I believe I discovered the source of all the confusion some years ago. I found repeated sources with the photo and Robert's name penned in below the picture in cursive script. It was from a folio of Southern officers and the original owner had written names in under the photos--misidentifying this man as Bob McCulloch. The folio was in a museum collection and was digitized and that's why so many people were finding it when they searched for Black Bob. I contacted the museum and pointed out that the image is of a general and they took the attribution down.

I don't know who this general is, but he's a poster boy for mustache wax, isn't he?

Here's a war time photo of Col. Robert (Black Bob) McCulloch
