I read that those usually were covered with felt or other materials. Still looks pretty uncomfortable with the wide heavy brim and massive center.

From wikipia I have that pic of Col. John Garland. Said to be taken in 1860 0r 61 when he was Colonel and Bvt. Brigadier. But is the eagle on the bicorn a Colonel's rank insignia, which would mean that his paired buttons would be non-regulation for that rank, or is it a symbol of other meaning which I think is more probable ... and why is it slanted?

That looks like an extra pair of--what do you call those? epaulets?--on the sides of his hat, that would normally go on his shoulders to attach the fringy things that go directly on the top of the arm/shoulder. I'm completely lacking the terminology here. But he has a nice pair on his shoulders already. Is the dark fan circle, part of the hat or part of the eagle decoration on top of it?

On all these hats and uniforms, there seems to be a menagerie displayed--I killed/plucked/sheared more eagles, bears, chickens, geese, swans, etc. than you. Even maybe unraveled more silkworm cocoons, sheared more alpaca and even a mo or two (for mohair, you know).

That fan circle seems to be a cockade and therefore is part of the hat.

They copied the Italian light infantry-- Bersaglieri whose hats were adorned with rooster feathers. There were many units used names like Garibaldi Guards.

I love hats. In my previous house which had a large office with built-in shelves, I had on display 23 hats/helmets.
