Soldier or Santa?

Anyone got an idea on this one. On the back, he says the picture didn't take well because the entire suit is red. His hat looks like a Santa hat with tassels hanging off to his right side, left side of photo. I looked to see what Santas looked like in the 1860's - 1870's and nothing like this. Doesn't look Zouve.

My avatar is an Augustus Saint-Gaudens work that is down in the city. I'm a big fan of Saint-Gaudens' work (Lincoln or otherwise). :smile:
 
Or it could be a Liberty Cap.

Concur with you Liberty Lady on St. Gaudens. Our best looking coins were designed by him.
 
Would anyone in a Garibaldi Guards-type unit look like this? They had the red shirts, but I don't know if they had red trousers, too. I'm also not sure that they had that type of hat even if other Italian-based units did.
