Apparently Hayes wrote a personal journal which included details of his units' activities during the Civil War; I have seen several citations which refer to the journal but indicate that it is held in the manuscript archives of the Library of Congress. I am researching the opening actions of the Battle of the Wilderness (5 May 1864) in which Hayes was commanding the 18th Massachusetts Infantry as they began a reconnaissance along the Orange CH Turnpike. His account of this movement is described as excellent but I can't find a transcription or scan of the Hayes journal on the internet.

The Library of Congress catalog doesn't list any manuscripts by Joseph Hayes although one of the cites describes that there are extracts of Hayes personal journal held within the papers of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. So, before I try to convince someone at the LOC to dig through the Chamberlain papers (all the time & expense that will take) I was wondering if anyone on CWT might have a copy of Hayes' journal or be able to point me to where they may be accessed on the internet.

Thanx.
