Last year, near Chapel Hill, memorializing my late good friend, Larry Cockerham, the MC referred to the "facilities" as portaLincolns. Well, yes, I was offended, but as everyone, except me and few others, stood at the playing of Dixie, it was water over the dam. Sometimes, you just have to shut up.

my son made a very good point to me tonight after watching the final episode of the mini-series. It is surprising that History Channel did not try to somehow connect the Hatfield-McCoy feud with aliens. Don't be surprised if a followup comes showing one or the other as being visitors from another planet. It should be mentioned there isn't proof they are not aliens.

my uncle is a retired police officer,ex marine, korean war combat vet.... got his *** blown up in a tank fighting gooks,got a bronze star and such and some hardware in his leg so he don't forget what happened.
anyhoo....... i recall as a boy hearing him yell " buford h pusser! whats wrong with these hamster brains anyway??" when making reference to the general population at large. he is NOT a patient sort, trust me.
always wondered if buford was for real then i saw "walking tall" with a friend from georgia who told me about him being a real man. IMO we need our PD to be more like him, maybe this country wld be a better/safer place to live. but thats just my measly 2 cents, what do i know.

Which point? Take a look at a topographical map of the area. Where you see nothing but wood and steep ridges, folks live back in there. Other than some fire and logging roads, the only way to get back in those Hollers is on foot. My wife's first home, until very recently looked exactly like the shack Anse Hatfield was staying in at the end of the show. Dirt floor, no water, no electricity, nothing. One of the floods of the Tug river got up high enough to wipe the place off the map. Lori's uncle, who was living in the "house" got a brand new trailer from the US Government, who had to clear the land and install a septic system.

A guy I knew once took creative writing classes at Kansas State, I think it was. He was from near Bristol, where three sate lines come together. He wrote songs when I knew him, but he told me that while at the university he wrote short stories. They were about having no electricity or running water, and being sixteen before he ever even went to town. I forget all the details, but he told me his writing professor disbelieved his stories, saying something like, "Nobody in America lives like that!"

Although not completely historically accurate, I enjoyed the series. I did like Tom Berenger's portrayal of Jim Vance though the real Jim Vance seemed tall, clean shaven, and had white hair. Like others have said, they did seem to make the Hatfields look better than the McCoy's to the point where they made the McCoy's seem cooky (especially Randall and his wife).

Wow, all I can say is I just didn't get that impression at all.

A few of the McCoy offspring seemed rather inbred, but then there was also Cap Hatfield and Cottontop, so...

That was a good series!

I thought Anse and Randall changed places somehow during the course of the feud. At the beginning, Anse didn't care about religion or God, drank and smoked, maybe a little shifty in his business. (Not near as shifty as that lawyer! Where's a lawyer-eating T-Rex when you need one?) Randall was just the opposite, rather insufferably self-righteous into the bargain. By the end, Randall was a drunken heathen and Anse a God-fearing peacenik!

I was especially observant on the weapons portrayed in the show and found them to be truely accurate except for the brass frame 1858 Remington. That one did not exist until the reproductions came into being.

They offed Jim anyway, but if they knocked off the lawyer at the start, then the McCoys may not have retained Bad Frank, thus no bounty.

Actually, Anse should've offed Jim directly after the shooting of the two Yankees; this would have saved everyone a whole lot of trouble on both sides. And then taken the dog home. Anse looked like the kind of guy who'd like dogs.

A mere technicality. He could say the Yankees shot Jim, thus Anse naturally had to shoot them both. The Yankees remain villains, Anse is a hero, and Jim gets conveniently shuffled off this mortal coil. What's not to love?

Then again, without Jim Vance and the shifty lawyer, this series probably lasts 30 minutes.

Anse would have probably ate the dog.

He didn't look like the dog-eating sort. Seemed like a normally calm fellow who smoked a pipe. Those types are usually fond of dogs.
