After his command in Indiana he transferred to the Army of the Ohio and commanded the 3rd division in the 13th Corps. This is the regiment he took to Knoxville. He then commanded the 2nd brigade , 2nd division, in the 13th Corps in the first part of the Atlanta Campaign. He later assumed command of the 2nd Division for the remainder of the campaign.

When Hascall was promoted to brigadier, the Lt. Col. of the 17th Indiana took over command . This was John T. Wilder who later commanded the Lightning Brigade. This was the brigade who were equipped with Spencer repeating rifles.
