Ham Loaf originated with Pennsylvania Dutch (Germans) in the 1800s. It is a meatloaf made from ground smoked ham and some regular ground pork with other ingredients added.

One of the best recipes is from the Lazarus Department store Tea Room. It was a tearoom in the Lazarus Department store in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Lazarus New England style ham loaf

2 pounds of ground ham
1 pound ground pork
1 cup graham cracker crumbs
3/4 cup milk
2 eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix pork and ham until well blended. Add the graham cracker crumbs, milk and eggs. Place into two greased loaf pans and bake for 1 hour. Slice and serve with pineapple sauce.

Serves 10 to 12.

Pineapple Sauce

20 ounce can crushed pineapple
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
pinch ground cloves

Combine the pineapple, sugar and 3/4 cup of water in a saucepan. Over medium heat, heat to boiling. Mix cornstarch with remaining 1/4 cup water and pinch of cloves.. Add cornstarch mixture to pineapple mixture and cook until sauce is slightly thickened and becomes clear.
