1848-1852: Attended Virginia Military Institute - (Graduated, ranked 7th in class of 24)​

Occupation before War:

Merchant & Civil Engineer in Harrisonburg, Virginia​
1859: In July, Serves as Captain of the newly formed militia unit, the Harrison Valley Guards​
1859: Present with his company at the hanging of John Brown, in Charles Town, Virginia, on December 2​
1861: In January, he is made the Colonel and commanding officer of the newly formed 4th Regiment Virginia Volunteers​

Civil War Career:

1861 – 1862: After merging with other units, he commanded the 10th Virginia Infantry Regiment as a Colonel in the Confederate Army​
1861: Commanded unit at Battle of First Manassas, Virginia​
1862: While leading his regiment up Sitlington's Hill, during the Battle of McDowell, Virginia, Gibbons was mortally wounded when he was struck by two bullets to the forehead​

Died: May 8, 1862

Place of Death: McDowell, Virginia

Age at time of Death: 28 years old

Burial Place: Woodbine Cemetery, Harrisonburg, Virginia
