I feel like I'm being "attacked" concerning my dream about Gettysburg--I have stated what my dream IS--and my feeling twice that I was shot at Gettysburg, as a Confederate officer (major in my dream). I can't back this up with PROOF- how could I? It's just a dream...and a feeling...and an obsession I have with the Civil War. My house is like a Civil War museum! Now, can I move on,please?

These are historians here... What they do is check facts. You may not be able to provide proof of what you dreamed, but it is possible to prove or disprove whether a major serving under Young was shot at Gettysburg and determine whether or not that dream has a basis in reality. That information was recorded; most of it still exists.

Regardless of whether it represents something that really happened, it's very cool to have such a vivid dream.

Thanks...I apologize for being testy. I have a very painful back that needs surgery soon--and a 60-year-old finds it hard to think his dream for 52 years is false.

There could be lots of different angles to the dream. Maybe you saw a friend get shot and it was not you. Maybe it was you who did the shooting. So many ways it could have happened as you experience in your dream, but from a different point of view.

It's still quite possible I'm missing something. Two of the "majors" were only majors for a short time before resigning and have records with index cards which list them as captains. If someone happened to be a major at Gettysburg and another rank before or after, it would be easy to miss.

You should definitely take a look at the records available, even without a personal connection it's amazing to see the documents that survive.

Do you have memories of officers / men of other units except those of Cobb's Legion? Perhaps from other regiments of Hampton's Brigade.

Oh wow @rhettbutler1865 I hope you didnt think I was trying to "prove your dream wrong" by asking so many questions. I was just trying to help figure out who you might have been in the dream.

The questions were specific just because the answers might help narrow down some of the possibilities. Since, as Allie pointed out, there isnt a Major who fit the bill, perhaps maybe the person was either a different rank or was promoted when another officer was killed. I was just trying to help you narrow down some of the possibilities. Im so sorry if I offended you.

Like @Littlestown I am really enjoying researching Cobbs Legion to try and help you figure out the mystery. My husbands gg grandfather served in the 16th Georgia Infantry. Many of the men in that Reg were recruited from some of the same places as the men of Cobbs Legion. His gg grandfather was killed in action at the Bloody Angle Spotsylvania on May 12, 1864.

I have also joined Ancestry.com--good excuse to find out exactly WHO was in the Civil War. Don't worry...you did not offend. Interesting story aboutyour husband--I have Barnum's Chilmark of Bloody Lane-is that the same? Or was that Antietam?

Great! Im glad you werent offended by my Qs and very sorry to hear about your back pain. I sure hope you are feeling better real soon. If you're like me, this weather certainly doesnt help the old bones.

One reason your original post caught my attention is Cobbs Legion Infantry was brigaded with the 16th Georgia. Other regiments in the brigade were 24th Georgia, Cobb's Legion Infantry Battalion and 15th North Carolina Infantry. In November 1862, the 15th NC was reassigned to Cooke's North Carolina brigade and the 18th Georgia (which had been in Hood's TX brigade) was assigned to Cobb's Georgia brigade.

The Bloody Lane was at Antietam. The Bloody Angle was at Spotsylvania. Lots of "Bloody" places - there's also the Bloody Pond at Shiloh and probably some others that I cant think of right off.

Cant wait to hear about your genealogy discoveries. Hopefully you will be able to discover a relative who was there. Please keep us posted.

In Gettysburg, "The Angle" was used be referred to as "the Bloody Angle" early in the 20th Century and Plum Run was referred to as "Bloody Run" from after the war until the turn of the century pretty much. Interesting how references to places change. Lots of that has to do with stories passing from fathers to kids and with veterans passing...

Hello from Canada. I am fascinated by your story and your dream! My sister and I visit Gettysburg whenever we can, and the last time we were there, she said to me out of the blue, 'We were here. I KNOW we were here!" I have had the same feeling, but not as strongly as you. Hope you can track down your major.
PS. This forum can take a bit of getting used to. Mostly we are great people with a huge amount of knowledge about the ACW. Give us a challenge like this, finding your major, and we get right into it. Brains engage and questions fly and, unfortunately one down-side with the internet is that it is hard to judge attitude with no vocal clues. We don't bite very often, and we love to help, so don't worry that we are not taking you seriously. If we thought that you weren't serious, most of us wouldn't have bothered to reply.
