He was killed at Champions Hill by a sharpshooter on June 17, 1863 but he had not yet recieved word that he had been promoted and the commission approved on May 28, 1863. He died a brigadier general and never knew it.

He was killed at Champions Hill by a sharpshooter on June 17, 1863 but he had not yet recieved word that he had been promoted and the commission approved on May 28, 1863. He died a brigadier general and never knew it.

He was actually killed in action on June 17, 1863, by a Union sharpshooter bullet thru his heart at the Square Fort fortification (redoubt) along the Confederate defensive works during the Siege of Vicksburg. Later, Square Fort was renamed Fort Garrott in his honor. His bust and Fort Garrott are located at Tour Stop #14 in the South Loop portion of the Vicksburg National Military Park.

Took over brigade command temporarily when Gen. Tracy was killed. He led this brigade until Gen. S.D. Lee superseded him.
