Garland was pretty unpopular for surrendering the brigade at Arkansas Post; I believe he had to be taken into McClernand's tent instead of being placed with the other officers because of a fear of being murdered.
I have heard nothing regarding him being involved with the brigade following that; I believe he was sent to Texas on recruiting duty.
