Gallagher Carbine

I had the opportunity to purchase a Gallagher and have been hitting nothing but walls trying to find more information. I have heard there are two places to look for the serial number, and the lack of records by Richardson and Overman make it difficult to track. I know basics such as the weapon being distributed to Union calvary in just a few states and about 17K made. There is what appears to be a SN on the lock plate which is 5850. I then found a number on the inside of the patch box lid which is 691. The initials "MP" are carved into the stock along with an "X". Would appreciate any guidance on where to go from here. Thanks
