gallager carbine information

I have a Gallager carbine with SN# 421. I am looking for which soldier or unit it was issued to or how to proceed finding out any information that I can on this carbine. It also has the initials JMB carved in the wood.

Welcome, enjoy. It is not listed in the SRS books. Of the Gallagers listed from #3 to #588 ( only 15 numbers) are all to the 1st Iowa Vol. Cav. . It is a starting point to see if your initials match anyone.

Gallagers were issued to the following: 1AR, 13TH IL., 3 IN., 9 IN., 4 IA., 7 IA. 9KS., 8 KY., 15KY., 4 MO., 1NY., 9 OH., 20PA., 21PA/. 1 TN/. 2 TN/. 8 TH., 9 TH. Per Coates & Thomas "Introduction to Civil War Small Arms" .That should give you something to keep you busy.
