Diane and 7th Mississippi Inf: Thanks to each of you. You folks on this forum are just outstanding. This is precisely the sort of "heads up" I was hoping to be shown. Yes, I knew McCulloch and his Missourians saved Forrest (maybe more than once) but I would not have positively picked them out of this painting because the title is simply "Southern Steel". So...whenever any of you have further insights like this one, PLEASE point them out to me.
I have said the following about Col. McCulloch in other threads here, but some of you have perhaps missed those posts, so I'll repeat it here. Col. Robert McCulloch was arguably as great a hero in central Missouri as Forrest was east of the Mississippi. He is just not as well known beyond his chosen county and state. It was said of him locally that he was so popular and so well respected that he could have won any political office in the area, simply by announcing his candidacy. Dignitaries from all over the country attended his funeral here in Boonville, MO, and I visit his grave every time I go to Walnut Grove Cemetery. On my "check off" list of things to do is to visit the grave of his cousin, Robert A. "White Bob" McCulloch, who served with him in the 2nd Missouri Cavalry. Robert A. is buried in a very small town in the southern part of my county. I have seen his monument on findagrave.com. I just need to pick a day to drive down there and pay my respects to him.
Once again, thanks to Diane, to 7th Mississippi, and to all the rest of you who will provide insights in the future as we all enjoy this art.
